As the Canadian Robocall political scandal unfolds I am struck by the weirdest sense of déjà vu. I realize déjà vu can be characterized as ‘weird’ phenomena in the first place, but this sense of ‘déjà vu’ is downright Nixonian. The Prime Minister and I are pretty much the same age, and we were both young and living in Toronto during the US Watergate years.

I am fairly certain he could not have missed it, since I wanted to miss it, and I tried to miss it, but I never could manage to escape it. In those days, Toronto only had a handful of television stations whose broadcast signal was strong enough to receive on a television set and the majority of the stations on our television dials were American.

During the Watergate Senate hearings, the American stations would frequently interrupt their regular broadcasts in order to carry the hearings ‘live’ – much to the crushing joy of my young heart. At lunch, when inclement weather forced me to eat inside, I was often stuck watching John Dean’s testimony rather than the Flintstones or Bewitched. All of which makes me wonder, if Stephen Harper is the Canadian Richard Nixon, where and who, is Harper’s John Dean?

It is so downright eerie watching Stephen Harper deny any Conservative wrongdoing when he knows very well how well that went worked for Tricky Dickie – and I must say, it doesn’t seem to be working out all that well for Stevie either. In fact, if my memory has entirely failed me, I think even John Dean once tried to make a case that the Republicans broke into the democratic party headquarters to look for evidence of illegal party ‘pay-offs’.

See, even blaming the victim comes out of Nixon’s bag of tricks or making calls sliming your opposition is –
And I quote (National Post) –

OTTAWA — The Conservatives have confirmed they are behind a rash of phone calls to Liberal MP Irwin Cotler’s Montreal-riding over the past couple of weeks in which constituents allegedly were told of Cotler’s resignation and a pending byelection.

But while the party says it was not breaking any rules, political analysts say the tactic crosses a line and will harm not only voters’ trust in the system, but perhaps even the Conservatives themselves.
“It’s disgusting,” said Queen’s University professor Ned Franks. “Politics is a blood sport but that doesn’t mean you have to resort to dirty blows.”

Numerous constituents in Cotler’s Mount Royal riding have complained of receiving calls in recent weeks from a marketing research company insinuating he has resigned and asking them to support the Conservatives in an upcoming by-election.

Ah, yes, sliming Irwin Cotler – just because the ‘cons’ cannot beat him in a fair political fight is just as dirty and disgrace when Canadians Conservatives do it as it was when Republicans engaged in Nixon’s bag of dirty tricks. Odd, how both Harper and I could watch Watergate scandal unfold and take two entirely different lessons from watching Nixon’s fall from grace.

NB; Saskboy and Dr. Dawg have fairly good round-ups and updates.

So far, a lack of snow and +Celisus temperature has been the big weather story for winter in the Centre of the Universe. Currently, slushie snow flakes are falling and melting once the snow hits the ground. The weekend forecast calls for more or less mild temepratures this weekend…so I was quite amused by this Jerusalem Post headline and picture.

Snow continued falling on the Golan Heights Thursday after particularly harsh storms Wednesday, leaving some residents trapped in their communities. Crews and residents alike were struggling to clear roads and paths, unaided by continuous snowfall. At Kibbutz Marom Golan, residents were stuck in the kibbutz after some 25 centimeters of snow accumulated overnight. Police said roads in the northern Golan Heights remained closed Thursday afternoon. In the northern Heights, school was canceled due to the snowfall and closed roads. In addition to schools in the northern Golan, children studying at the Har v’Gai school in the Upper Galilee also got a snow day

I don’t know. I wrote two books in the past 12 months and started a specialty line of women’s wear. My Israeli partner took the samples back to Israel. Not only will the website be built in Israel, but Israel will be the corporate home to my dress company. After 17 years of excuses for avoiding the shtetl, and cracking jokes about never going north of Bloor Street in Toronto; I am moving back into its heart. My children are all late teenagers and my inner Jewish mother wants to assert a measure of control over their social life/pool. Go figure.

So yes, I might blog or not.

A rather new political meme has been mid-wifed and delivered via this New York Times article by Avinoam Bar-Yosef which suggests Marwin Barghouti needs to be released to keep the peace process going…. First, massaging the background

The Israeli peace camp has often called for the release of Barghouti, but the security establishment has strongly opposed it. The 52-year-old, life-long activist is held responsible by Israel for directing many attacks and suicide bombings against Israeli civilians, and he was sentenced in 2004 to five life sentences

And the meme.

The world should understand that there is a new Israeli phenomenon: most Israelis have moved to the left when it comes to the peace process and are ready for compromise even if, for tactical reasons, they vote for the right.

No. Actually I see no evidence of this of Israelis moving to the left when it comes to the peace process….if anything, I would suggest Israelis are voting rightwing and becoming far more hawkish, while economically, most Israelis stand firmly on the left – just think of the success of the recent of the housing protests.

I suspect this is the meme is the hope of the last bastion for the Israeli media, who are the last, and greatest concentration of lefties, still left in Israeli society. Mazel Tov with the meme…but it might have more weight; if the organization Barghouti lead (the Tanzim wing of PLO) was not the terrorist recruitment arm for Al Aqsa’s Martyrs’ Brigade. Some of us can still remember the havoc and blood of the intifada.
The Ballad of Oslo’s Children.

I do not have an editor on the blog, and consequently, there are often careless grammatical mistakes to be found in any given post. Generally, I do not even bother to proof-read what I have written since this is a ‘free’ venture and I have only so much available ‘free’ time. In my mind, this is acceptable – given no one pays me, but when your job is ‘editor’ and you are paid for exercising ‘editorial skills’, it is assumed you will exercise your skill set ‘on the job’. Apparently, this isn’t a given for the editors at The Toronto Star.

This actually explains a great deal about the Toronto Star in general. If the editors cannot be bother to proof the fussy little things like ‘language’ why bother checking the facts…

Gilad Shalit has returned home.

I can hardly believe I have lived to witness such a miracle, and miraculous it is. The enemies of Israel have rarely returned any Israeli captive – let alone one who is still alive. After six years of captivity that can only be described as cruel and contrary to all established international law concerning the welfare and treatment of captured soldiers, Gilad Shalit has been redeemed out of Egypt.

The price for Shalit’s redemption from captivity was steep and bitter. The ransom has been paid with yesterday’s blood, and possibly, tomorrow’s tears. It is not a deal I would have wanted to be made and it is a deal which has caused controversy and much bitterness within Israel – and inside the Jewish community outside of Israel. But today, in harsh reality of day; we know the price and value of a Jewish life. One Palestinian is worth 1/1027th of a single Jew. I did not set this value on a Palestinian life, and neither did the government of Israel; this is the price the enemies of the Israel have demanded for a single Jewish life. So be it, and let the blood be on their hands.

Everyone and their grandmother has criticized the Israeli government. In an act of irony Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu even wrote a treatise years ago arguing against the negotiation with terrorists or the release of terrorists for any Israeli. And yet, it was the Likud government lead by Netanyahu, who was able to secure the release of Gilad Shalit. There is an old axiom in Israeli politics – Only the Israeli left can make war, only the Israel right can make peace. Only the Israeli right could have paid this bitter ransom..

Those outside of Israel often forget how small the country of Israel is – understandably so – given that Israel often punches above her weight. This smallness, creates an interesting dynamic within the society. Israeli society looks at the soldiers of Israel, as literally their own sons and daughters. There is a connection, a personalization of each soldier of the IDF. There is a ‘parental or family’ type relationship between civilian and military within Israel society so Gilad Shalit was not just the son of Noam and Aviva, but of everyone.

Intrinsic within this relationship is a trust, a sacred trust, between the soldiers of Israel and the people. It translates simply like this; no matter what, one way or another, we will bring you home, alive or dead, we will bring you home. The price for Shalit was bitter, but the sacred promise has been fulfilled and the trust preserved. And this, is far more important than what might possibly come in the future. Many other countries say this to their soldiers, but only Israel, fully lives out this creed.

Ask yourself this; who did Israel exchange for the life of Gilad Shalit? Murders and thugs, and such as these, are not the people to lay the foundation of a great society. This is a society based on infamy and blood which will topple under the weight of its own corruption. Someone explain to me how Israel is the loser of this exchange when the likes and lives of those like Amana Jawad Mona are no longer Israel’s responsibility to clothe and feed? I will take a thousand Gilad Shalits over the likes of her.
(Source: Arutz Sheva)

Even now, the enemies of Israel demand more Israeli soldiers be captured and held hostage for ransom. The truth is, the enemies of Israel, have never stopped trying to capture the treasure of the Israeli nation, but, Baruch haShem, their best efforts to date have resulted in only empty hands.

For the past six years, Gilad Shalit has been held in captivity, for six years, Rosh HaShanah has come and gone without Shalit numbered among us. On Yom Kippur, it is thought that our life and portion for the coming year is sealed in the Book of Life. On this day, it is held lawful to pray with even the greatest transgressors among us in the synagogue, and yet, for five Yom Kippurs; Gilad Shalit has not been counted among our midst.

But even so, for six Yom Kippurs, Adon Olam has written Gilad into the Book of Life and sustained his life against the odds of men. And in this year, 5772, Adon Olam has deemed that Gilad Shalit’s portion of life shall be that he can be counted among his people during the holy days of Sukkot. For those who do not know, after the Babylonian captivity ended, Sukkot was the first sacred holiday observed after the resumption of sacrifices in the Temple.

So it is right and proper that a captive of Israel has been redeemed and returned during Sukkot. For those who question the wisdom of the Israel government, perhaps, it is better to have a little faith in the one who has always sustained us and redeemed us.

I never really ‘got’ why Andrew Sullivan has a following. He goes completely half-cocked on the strangest tangents – just think his embarrassing public tirades over Sarah Palin’s last child and his demands for pregnancy medical records. He is an alleged conservative pundit who, as far as I have been aware of him, has yet to endorse a Conservative candidacy or even a conservative position. And finally, he has been wrong far more often than he has been right.

It is no secret that Sullivan is no fan of Israel, and he hasn’t been for years, if anything his animosity towards the Jewish state is perhaps the closest thing he has actually has in common with traditional American paleo-conservativism. In fact, he animosity towards Israel really reminiscent of the old school wasp attitudes towards Jews in general.

His latest ‘dish’ is a rant against Israel and nature of the relationship the United States has with Israel. While one can be critical of the relationship and even suggest the net benefit of a relationship with Israel carries more negatives than positives (a fact I would disagree with) it does not help to make your case if your argument hinges on misinformation.

For example, and I quote ‘Which ally violates the Non-Proliferation treaty and manages to get its super-power protector to maintain total silence on this glaring fact?’

Israel has never signed the Non-Proliferation treaty – period. Simply put, you cannot violate a treaty if you have never been a party to the treaty.

Rest in Peace Jack.
What a sad day for Canadian politics. I didn’t agree with Layton’s politics (either local or federal) but he was a patriot, and fought the good fight, as he saw fit.
Not much more we can ask of a man than that.

The Globe and Mail carries an article on the high cash balances large North American corporations are carrying on their books.

Welcome to a new kind of economic recovery – one with a cash crisis of a different kind than the liquidity crunch that caused the recession three years ago. This is a crisis of spending, or lack of it. Some of the largest and most profitable U.S. corporations are collectively sitting on almost $2-trillion (U.S.) in cash and contributing little in the way of job creation.

Campbell Soup’s cash balance at the end of its fiscal third quarter is a pittance compared with the $91-billion held by General Electric Co., the $28.8-billion that decorates the balance sheet of Oracle Corp. or the $13.8-billion in the coffers of Coca-Cola Co. But the fact that Campbell’s cash, and the money held by scores of other big corporations, is for the most part sitting idle – and not being invested in growth or new jobs in the U.S. – underscores the fortress mentality that is gripping chief financial officers scarred by the 2008 liquidity crisis.

Dan Ammann, chief financial officer of General Motors Co., which has $33-billion in cash on the books, put it this way last week during a conference call on the auto maker’s second-quarter results: “I go back to our fundamental strategy here, which is we want to keep the fortress balance sheet.” GM has contributed to job creation, boosting employment in North America to 98,000 people as of June 30, from 96,000 on Dec. 31. But in a presentation on Tuesday that included a slide entitled “Fortress Balance Sheet,” GM said it will increase vehicle production capacity by 45 per cent over the next four years in the BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India and China. That will mean new employment in those countries, but not in the United States or Canada, both of which were singled out on another slide as high-cost manufacturing countries.

Am I surprised that the US and Canada are singled out as ‘high-cost manufacturing countries’? No, this is the price to be paid for having a standard of living which elevates most of the citizenry from living 12 to a room and having to dump a bucket down a public drain twice a day.

What is galling, is that these companies (especially the automakers), demanded our governments use public funds to help them stave off bankruptcy just a scant few years ago. GM is free to build their cars in whatever country they desire, but when you suck at the public teat, then be prepared to give back.

In GM’s case, the company is mooching off the taxpayers of Canada and the US. Time to end financing and corporate tax breaks for corporate welfare bums who cannot remember where their bread gets buttered. Frankly, the entire board and executive management of GM should be tarred, feathered and run out of North America.
